Some background information about the Greek language:

The history of the Greek Language began with the Mycenaean civilization in the thirteenth century BCE. The earliest documents that have been found were written in a script called Linear B.  After the disappearance of the Mycenaean civilization, writing disappeared from Greece. The form of Greek used by writers from Homer (8th century B.C.) through Plato (4th century B.C.) is called "Classical Greek." Later on, in the ninth to early eighth century BCE a script based on the Phoenician syllabary was created. The oldest  inscriptions that have been found are in this new writing system.
