A little background information about the German language:
The earliest records that we have today in German were written in about A.D. 750. In this period, there was no official language, and only the local dialects were being written. The history of the language before that time is a matter of reconstruction by making inferences from different documents and studying similar languages that descended from the same source as the German language. Linguists are not sure whether the peoples who first spoke German lived near the Baltic or the Caspian Sea. From Indo-European developed Primitive Germanic, a language which is also almost undocumented. Later a more uniform language came from the original language after the various chancelleries of the Holy Roman Empire began.
